I have used that trick since 73 of the 5 gal. can with one of gas and 4 of water after one bozo got me for a free five one night The old 73 F250 4X4 sure liked her gas and a 19 gallon tank did not go far when out playen in the back country strip mines And running out of gas back then in the middle of the night was not fun so i always carried a spare ten and that would get me home . Not that night as i only had the one and atleast i was able to get close enough to be in radio range of my one buddy and get ahold of him to bring me a five more . After that both cans had one gallon of gas and 4 water. Reframed from going out to the strip mine from the local watering hole . The next weekend i got hit again and down the road from the local watering hole sat this chevel dead in the road with the hood up , Just had to drive down and asked if he had car troubles he said yes it just coughed and quiet . Asked if he had gas he told me oh yea i have a 1/4 tank , told him that ya really have to watch where ya get gas from and drove off and wet home . Few years later the neighbors started stealing the lawnmower gas out of our garage Did the same thing to them here in this town any JUNK car or truck that has not moved in two weeks can get towed , they lost five cars to me .
