My neighbor lets me borrow his tractors & tools with my own understanding that if I break something, I fix or replace it. He does not have to tell me that, I just assume it is my responsibility to take care of it.
I would never dream of returning something I borrowed that was broken, I have used some of his specialty tools and try and return them cleaned up and that same night or first thing in the morning.
I put in fuel that I used for his tractors and also try and clean them up also.
