Thanks for you help guys. My filter does have the "steel wool" filter material in it, but it was laying loose in there with a larger size screen at the bottom and the top. But like I said it was just laying in there. The filter material needs replaced. If you shake it gentle or bump it, small pieces of it shake out. I don't want to suck that up in a fresh rebuild. It's a rectangular shape and all I can find is the round premade elements.
