I work for a municipality. We've been running that size dump for all our work since the late 70's both gas and diesel. They have all had the allison auto. Never had a mechanical problem with the trans. On our 96 ford 8000, we have had to replace the trans computer twice (allison world) but the trans has been bullet proof. As a side note, the late 70's trucks had 427 gas engines. Gobs of power but hard on fuel. The 80's trucks had the 8.something 4 stroke GM diesel. Gutless but good on fuel. The 90's trucks are all 6 cyl. cats. Not as much power as the gas, but close and good on fuel. When were doing snow with the front plow , underbody plow and a load of salt, we work the snot out of the trans. This year we will start replacing the 90's trucks. Other than rust, a ten year old municipal dump (ours are 5-7yd) for a small community sells for $3-4000 and only has about 60,000 miles on it.
