The problem is not so much the ability of the kid to drive the tractor... It IS a problem, however, when you're NOT around and the kid wants to show off to his friends and/or do things himself.
Real dangers arise when children think they KNOW EVERYTHING, climb a tractor, and proceed to do something hazardous. They get cocky - They may misjudge turns, go too fast, and drive through your fence.
I've started a tractor when I was 7, and it happened to be in gear - thank heavens it stalled out before reaching the end of the barn.
I rode around in the bucket a lot, still do, and have built/repaired buildings while high up in the bucket.
