The only thing that I've ever used synthetic oil in is the 13 speed RoadRanger. It called for Syn50, the transmission was tight, and I figured there was no need to mess with that when I installed the PTO.... so it got new syn50 and I haven't looked at it since. It didn't look like it was changed perhaps more than once if at all in 800000 miles either. Otherwise I use plain old dino oil in everything else. So long as it meets SAE specs called for by the machine it's good enough for me. I've used everything from Walmart specials up to Esso XD3 and NewHolland branded oils. I've never noticed a pinch of difference between any of them.... As long as it meets the spec I'll use it, and the cheaper the better. My mothers VW TDI calls for a Synthetic 5W40 and it seems to me that an oil change for that car is something like 65 bucks for oil and filter.... My Ford Ranger costs about 20 bucks.... and for what it's worth, I change it about every 10000 miles or twice a year, or whenever I think of it, or...... It's approaching 200 miles now and still going strong. Oil's aren't what they used to be.

But, on the other hand, there is a secret language that our mechanical companions readily do speak. It is an interesting form of communication that involves all the senses of the listener. In this series we are going to investigate and learn the basic rudimentary skills of understanding this lingo.
