I put down a couple of obnoxious stray dogs last summer with a 9mm automatic. It took five rounds for one and six for the other. And I was shooting directly into vital organs and the head. I was in the middle of it before I realized I should have grabbed my .45 or .44 Mag. I wasn't too proud of the whole scene. Not because I put down the dogs, but because I didn't use a more effective weapon.
That's why I question the effectiveness of the 9mm. When I was discussing it with the County Sheriff a couple of days later, the Sheriff said if I could take out a couple of stray dogs with a 9mm, he ought to make me a Reserve Deputy. He, himself, is aware of the limitations of the 9mm, but that's what they give the LEO's nowadays.
So, I'd conclude 18 rounds with a 9mm on a mountain lion is probably about right.
