John, If you have the SLIGHTEST question as to the quality of this guy's work (and it appears you have ample ground to think so) I'd insist the block be surveyed by a reputable shop. You can hone and re-ring a block but not in most instances. If the bore isn't straight and true, the new rings will wear much faster as well as the cylinder walls. If you bore the cylinders, you probably want to replace the pistons and rings for the new bore rather than just oversize the rings. Now that's just the pistons and rings.... there is also need to go over the head with new valves, or at least turning of the old ones. Valve seats and guides need looking at by someone who knows what they're doing. This guy might be a friend but he won't be for long if you're engine comes back wrong. Save the friendship and "re-explain" that you said you wanted him only to pull the engine for you. I do most of my own work but what I farm out, I farm out to the best shops I know.
