thats becoming a real problem here too, i take "late nite strolls" around our place when possible,just to check things out, im not too bad as the vehicles and tractors are in kind of a hole, and one would have to pass the house to get to them,also my ol' redbone can hear a mouse break wind at 50 yards,your probably right on the battery these low life sometimes carry around a 12v pump with several feet of fuel line and a set of jumper cables to hit quick and quiet
