Kind of a judgement call on changing it, mine was like a coffee milkshake when I got it, leaked out the cover up top, tightened that, even broke a bolt, extracted it out and replaced,no more leaks, but that grass soaked oil on the deck sure burns nice, that lube was really nasty. Splash lube system, I'd lean on changing it more often, say if you had one since new especially at the beginning of each season or at recommended hours. Hard to say whether it will ever make a difference on wear, whose measuring that, but makes you feel better, yep fresh aaaawwwwllll in that thar gear box ;).
Will be interesting to see what it looks like since changing it last year, it does not hold much, always water in these things that is why I change it and is what must turn it to a coffee color.
