Abe was an interesting person, good reading about him, and those times, my grandfather worked on the centennial in the early 60's as a commercial artist, for the NYS civil war commission, the state education dept or some similar agency here has quite bit of documents, photos from then etc. I have a black and white of Lincoln during the civil war, taken from a negative, would have to dig it up, might the one of the 2 from his visit to Antietam, I forget which one, but it's a nice clear shot, my grandfather must have pulled a lot of information from the archives for this state project, found a file he kept at home that ended up here after he passed 30 years ago and that photo was in it. The state has at least one very significant document from then in their possession, some idiot, the curator, state historian actually stole a bunch of items was actually selling them on ebay, got caught, a atty who was knowledgeable on these items flagged them to the authorities, most if not all items were returned, should have seen him running from the cameras on the news, he had a great state job, six figure + all the benefits, not anymore.... pure idiot, how do you screw up like that in times like this, a job like that is just about as good as it gets for the state.
Ole Abe did attend some formal schooling, and was granted a law license at some point after, but I think the criteria to become a lawyer is a lot different today than what he had to do. He was definitely out of the country, a farmer, then ran a store with a partner, went belly up, 2nd time around it did ok, then he started getting into legal representation, followed by politics, at least something like this, very interesting history, like some of his quotes, though I can't remember a one right now !
