The compression ratio is the volume of the combustion chamber (cylinder, head, etc) with the piston at BDC divided by the volume of the cylinder with the piston at TDC. Those two volumes can be measured by measuring how much fluid (oil, etc) is required to completely fill the chamber at BDC and TDC.
