Lots of good ideas so far. I like to find the cheapest way that I can think of. I put a directional signal on my old ford tractor that goes to a flat four pin trailer connector to hook to any trailer that I pull down the road behind it. I went to radio shack and bought a plastic box ( about 3"x6"x 1.5" deep ) to hold the electrical stuff, auto parts store for a three way toggle switch and a regular toggle switch, a flasher and a flat plug with wire. Ran a wire off of the "on" connector of the key switch to one side of the flasher and another wire from the other side of the flasher to the center of the 3 way toggle. I drilled a hole in the box so I could mount the 3 way so it would flip horizontally ( the flasher is inside the box ), One wire from each side of the switch to each tail light through the flat connector. Make sure that you buy the four wire flat connector plug and connect the ground ( white) wire properly and you have directionals, just flip the switch either way and that light will flash. If you want tail lights also just run a wire to the regular toggle and into the connector wires and you will have them too. Not too difficult, just a little planning, buy the flasher first and then get the right size box that it will fit in. I mounted mine inside the rear fender where I could reach it and sealed it to keep it waterproof. I don"t know what your equipment is or how it is wired so I don"t know if my solution will help you, I started from scratch to solve my problem.
