I just bought a new King Kutter 60" tiller yesterday and love it. Appears to be much better built than I expected. I especially like the all-gear drive. I must admit though, I bought it ought of sheer frustration. I looked at two used tillers for sale locally. Both with tines half-worn out and $1000 asking prices on either of them. If either had been $500 - I'd bought one.
I then called Tractor Supply and the girl on the phone said they had new 5' (60") King Kutter tillers for $789 - and I couldn't believe my ears. I raced over there - some 25 miles away - and found out she was looking at the price sheet for rotary cutters - NOT - tillers. Tiller price was $1499. I then drove over to the nearby Deere dealer and they had some green tillers (not Deere) price around $1800 and they were chain-drive. Out of disgust - I went back to Tractor Supply - said I'd take the 5 footer and they then said they were sold out - except for one put away on reserve for somebody. I complained a bit about going there on a wild-goose-chase - and they then agree to sell it to me. They took $70 off for my troubles. Then, when I got home - I found in the same day's mail a 10% discount card from Tractor Supply. Went back and got another 10% off. Total price was around $1286.
I had been looking for a four-foot tiller with the off-set mount but they were sold out. So, I took the five footer thinking I might have to remove some tines since my two main tractors are only 33 horsepower (IH B-275s). Ended up no problem at all. I have crap muck soil full of rocks - and my tractor ran it fine. I DID plow it first. Sod was so heavy this year since I didn't spray until spring - I needed something to break it up and the disks wouldn't do it. Only problem was - after tilling a full acre the temp gauge was reading a little hot. So - I'd let it cool for a few minutes here and there and all went fine.
