I built a 7 row 19 inch planter several years ago using a John Deere 7000. Just going to hook on to it this weekend. I believe I put down around 175,000 to 180,000 which is about 6 to 7 beans per foot. This is off of the top of my head. Remember you have to take into account the germination. I have some NK beans with 80% germ this year. Another thing is with more beans per foot you get more "pushing action" if they get sealed in some. You can really notice this with 12 beans per foot in 38 inch rows. I think 4 beans per foot isn't enough. If every thing was ideal it might work, but I wouldn't risk it as a good stand is so important to the final yield. I think the 4 or 5 per foot would be more like the final stand for 6 to 10 inch rows. I would sort of shoot for that 175,000 seeds per acre. I don't like those straight up beans either. In the 19 inch rows I have been trying to use either a semi-bush or bush bean. Seems like the yield is better in rolling hills. Good luck.
