I've had an L3300 GST for about 7 years. Bought it with about 500 hours on it, only put about 500 hours on it since. Absolutely love it. So glad my wife STRONGLY suggested we wait until we could afford it and a loader vs. an 8N or Ferguson. (I still really want a Ferguson 30).
Mechanically I've had to replace the internal 3 pt hitch connecting rod and tighten up the bolts around the clutch housing. Log took out a tire rod, welded it up with 1" angle iron. Carries a Bradco backhoe just fine, crawls thru the woods like a logging machine (fwd), about impossible to get stuck. When the river floods this tractor and cow cubes are the only way to get my cows to high land. It's perfect for fencing. Pulls an 8' Brillion stalk cutter without trouble. The Kubota is my chore tractor where as on a "real" farm I suppose a 656 would be a chore tractor and a 1086 would be the real tractor. Oh well.
What you can do with these in 4x4 and with a loader in my opinion just isn't possible with with a the old 30 horse 2wd ag tractors, except as others have mentioned tillage; they are light for tillage. If you pull a two bottom disc plow you need to have 4x4 on and it moves the back end of the tractor over. I have no weights or fluid in tires so maybe it isn't a fair analysis. My FIL has an L3250. He's replaced a water pump and a 3 pt rockshaft arm (pulling a stump at an angle with a box blade) His is 4 cyl, has about 2,000 hours.
I really like the GST trans, I probably wouldn't buy one with a hydro unless the ONLY thing I was going to do was cut hay. I don't like the fact that you can't operate them standing up, not enough room between steering wheel and seat to do that.
L3300 on Sunday, cut hay for about 4 hours with the JD #9, fuel gauge barely moved.
