We produce about 30% of our Petroleum needs currently. If we want to maintain that, we need to open up California, Florida, New England, and Arctic waters to exploration and development now; otherwise we'll fall even further behind the 8 ball as the Gulf of Mexico declines.
Combine that with sensible conservation measures, expansion of nuclear energy, plug-in hybrid cars, etc it really isn't unrealistic to believe between increase production and reduced demand we could be 50% domestic in 20 years.
