The two are a little different, to my way of thinking. With starting price where seller would be satisfied, highest bidder will get the item, period, and you know that when you bid. With unknown "reserve" price, you don't know if you'll get it or not, and some buyers are turned off by that. Not sure exactly why- seems they want either a "pure auction", or would negotiate face to face in the conventional way, but nothing in between. Reserve auction is kind of a hybrid of the two, and I've got no problem with it.
