Bruce,
Unfortunately, horses are like machines in that they require constant maintenance, some of which is very expensive.
I have four horses. The feed bills, vet bills, farrier bills, tack bills, transport bills, bills for maintenance of their facilities, bills for vaccinations, bills for de-worming medications, bills for first-aid supplies, etc., etc. just keep coming. Then there's the time expense of caring for them to be considered also.
A horse typically walks somewhere around 8 - 10 miles per hour. The nearest town to me is 10 miles away. I really don't want to spend two hours commuting to pick up supplies.
Horses are a delightful pet, if you can afford them. At least, that's been my experience.
