Out here, a fire departments will install a hydrant at N/C if your pond is reasonably close to a road..."Dry hydrant", i think it's called? They use it to pull water into the tank trucks in the event of fire in areas without city water rather than go back to an area w/ city water. Real firemen on this site could probably shed more light...
