Were they old? I would be disappointed in $.60/lb too, but maybe they went for the going canner price.
Why did you sell them now? If it looks like Summer pasture is going to be in short supply and hay will be high, maybe other cattle producers are cutting back on the size of their herds. A large volume of cows at one time is likely to bring the price down.
When I was a kid, my Dad usually bought some feeders at the stockyards every Spring and sometimes would bring home a cow or two if he found some that he thought were good deals. We sold some of the much bigger feeder steers in late Fall, but my Dad found that he came out better selling them by the half, butchered on our ranch. The cows either stayed for a few years if they had good calves, or else they got to go back to the stockyards.
I still would be disappointed in $.60/lb! You might want to check on the prices before you haul any in in the future. I think I would be eating a lot of hamburger rather than selling for $.60/lb.
