Going with the Franklin variable speed pump has many advantages. It's a three phase motor down the well so there are no start windings or starter switch to fail. The 3 phase motor is smaller per HP and more efficient. Single phase power is fed to the control box, it makes three phase and runs the motor at what ever speed required. Instead of the pump cycling on and off during continuous low flow applications. The motor just slows down some until you shut the tap off. Then the pump motor shuts off. The pump doesn't start when ever you draw a cup of water either, there is still a pressure tank used.
If my pump wasn't a two wire it would have been converted to a SubDrive by now. Unless three hoses are used to water trees and lawn, the pump cycles on and off all day.
There is a manufacture of submersible pumps for 3" casings depending on your well.
