To the contrary, many of the open-gear greases are thinner by NLGI grade #, not thicker. Common chasis grease in a tube is often NLGI #2.
Most open-case gear greases at NLGI #00 - much thinner - but also stickier. Some common open-gear greases - also used in crawler track rollers:

Castrol SHL 00 is a synthetic, semi–fluid NLGI 00 grease that combines the stay–put power of a grease with the consistency of a gear lubricant. As a result, Castrol SHL 00 virtually eliminates fluid leakage from wheel seals, hubs and axles, which can be a serious environmental and safety hazard for over–the–road fleets and can increase maintenance costs
Mobilith SHC 007 is an NLGI 00 Grade / ISO VG 460 grease with a synthetic base fluid; it has a recommended operating temperature range of -50º C to 150 º C with appropriate relubrication intervals. Its primary uses are in grease filled industrial gear cases subject to high temperatures, where conventional semi fluid greases will not provide acceptable lubricant life and in non-driven heavy-duty truck trailer wheel hubs. vics - 460 at 40C
Chevron Texaco Dura-Lith NLGI 000 is a semifluid grease formulated to meet the lubrication requirements of underground mining machinery having enclosed gear cases where housings and seals have lost their ability to retain conventional gear oils.
