Well, guess I'll kick some of my own dust. I didn't want to get into a long detailed chronology of the 700R4 - but . . .
Up to 1985 the trans had some severe weak spots and updating requires major hardware. Late 85 it was greatly improved.
Mid 1988 model-year - a few more refinements added that enhanced it, and in the next few years a few more - all pretty much minor.
Speaking in general terms - late 85 and up was pretty relable - but at this time much of this is moot. I'll assume most transmissions from the 80s that are still out there have probably been rebuilt at least once and upgraded. Lockup converters are the same from 1982 to 1995 as long as 30 spline and NOT the early 27 spline - or a few rare 6 lug diesel converters. For the most part - for any trans that has rebuilt/upgraded properly, 85 to 91 are pretty much the same in regard to durability.
In regard to transmission controls - lockup control is easy added with - either some homemade wiring or some cheap aftermarket kits.
