I couldn't help thinking during that one about my roommate at the University of Texas - he was from Hong Kong and his parents were helping him get through school.
He worked as hard at his education as the folks in the story you mentioned worked at their trucking job. He put in an average of 14 hours per day studying for the two years I was down there.
He's now a research scientist with Bell Laboratories.
One of my other roommates (also from China) came bursting into our room at 4:00AM one night whooping and hollering - he had found a mistake in a 40 page mathematical proof in his professors' text book. He came back the next day like he was king of the world - said he showed it to his professor and his prof said - "this book has been in publication for 15 years and no one has ever found error!".
China is already a huge force - but what they are now would be nothing compared to if a substantial percentage of their population had a good education and the opportunity to put it to work!
Some folks think a 40 hour work week ought to make them a really cushy living.
