I have done both of the above. Only did one complete tractor and felt I lost my shirt on it. Was a 9N Didn't appear to need much on the outside but wound up rebuilding the engine, Trans, and replacing all the sheet metal except the hood. I feel I am fussy and don't want to have to go back and fix something after the paint is applied. I also use Acrylic Urethane paints. Wound up the total bill was right at $6000 and only $1000 of that labor. I had Way more hours in it than that though.
As to the tractor driving/farm labor I help a neighbor cut silage in the fall. Started at $10 with this guy bout 10 years ago and last fall he paid $16.
