Sounds like you've never driven one. The diesel Chevettes are far from unperpowered. They have a lot more snot than the gas Chevettes. I've got two 1981s and drive them around the mountains of New York and on the Interstate. They easily cruise at 80 MPH. If I keep the speed down to 70 MPH, I get 46-48 MPG.
Diesel Chevette, by the way, is 1.8 litres and is a converted Isuzu gas engine - NOT a HD diesel. 51 horsepower at 5000 RPM and 72 lb. TQ at 2000 RPM.
The Isuzu 4BTIT is a whole different deal. It is a very heavy duty truck diesel. 3.9 liter, 110 horesepower at 3000 RPM, and 232 pound-feet of torque at 1800 RPM. It is designed to last 500,000 miles with heavy-duty use.
