This is only the latest outreagous example of a Congress that allows a small lobbie (radical ''greens'') to lead the country into recession and compromise National Security as it pertains to our dependance on foreign oil. We have the media telling the nation that big oil companies are making obscene profits on $140.00 per barrel oil. Wake up America, 70% of the crude consumed in the US comes from Saudi Arabia, Mexico, Venezuela and Kuwait. All 4 of these countries oil industries are totally controlled by their respective goverments. There are no US companies operating or partnering on oil wells in any of these countries although Shell is trying to develop natural gas fields in the Middle east. Oil is a commodity, traded and speculated on the same as corn or wheat, when a US oil company pays $140.00 per barrel (42 US gallons) refines about 34 US gallons out of that barrel of oil, distributes it and sells it for about 1% profit. It is also true that the oil the US company does own or control also goes up so therefore their profits increase, but how can a company be faulted for that. Would anyone reading this take less for the produce of their land than the market was willing to pay? The only answer is to drill on land and offshore in the USA while developing long term, feasible, alternate energy sources. The USA has, by conserative estimates, 60 years of domestic demand untapped. Alarmist tales of the World running out of hydrocarbons is simply a lie. As exploration and development technology has advanced, the worlds proven reserves of both oil and natural gas have increased every single year since 1970.
