wire brush them and then get a small can of that roll on bed liner and coat them try not to get a real thick layer on the bead area it will make it hard to get them on and off when needed coat the res well and you should be fine I used rubberized undercoating once but didn't like it also use a smooth brush to apply the liner material that way you don't have all those ripples to deal with if you do get much on the bead
