the main advantage to 12v that i can think of is that of the system being the same as pickups and cars so if it needs to be boosted you dont have to make or worry about special circumstances. i have been buying 10si delco alt. from autozone for 26 bucks and i think your rebuilt 6v gen.is going to cost a lot more. priced a regulator lately?the main cost you have is the alt. a voltage reducer for the coil,an alt connector and new 12v lights if you have them.by the way you dont have a voltmeter you have an ammeter and they sometimes quit showing amps used but will continue to pass elect. thru them 12v wont hurt the starter unless you grind on it alot but the motor will turn over faster which may give you quicker starts.i changed a cub to 12v 7 years ago and still have not had a starter problem
