Hey old, have you told him the other version of the motto?.....Navy, it"s not just a job, it"s a f---ing night mare"...LOL Sounds like he might be going in under a 6 year program something like I did. What I got was a year inactive reserve to complete high school, then 6 years active duty and another year inactive reserve when, and if I didn"t reenlist out at the end of the hitch. I spent the time between the USS Wm V Pratt DDG44 (two years) and the USS America CV66 (two years) and the remaining two divided between schools in Great Lakes and Norfolk/Little Creek VA and then about 4 months shore duty in Ingleside, TX. The Machinist Mate rate for us conventional guys was a dying rate from the start, something my recuiter didn"t tell me, since they were getting away from the boilers making the steam in favor of the Nuke"s and the gas turbines. Between that and the "politics" of everything, be it over color, or gender, I just couldn"t handle all the BS anymore so I got out when my hitch ended in "92. I think the new guys will have it a bit better now, in some respects, with internet access and phones to call home, etc. At the same time I also wonder if it will be better for the Navy as a whole when it comes to keeping their minds on their jobs and not on what"s happening back home, or if they are all the time able to "call home to mommy" when something goes wrong are they going to still come out of the experience as strong and self sufficient/confident as those of us that had to tough out the deployments and rely on snail mail and the occasional overseas call to keep in touch. It may all be nothing but I remember even in the 6 years I was in from "86 to "92 how much difference there was in the guys coming to the ships from boot camp when they just lightened up on some of the training regulations. I"m glad I didn"t stay in, I"m making alot more money and having more fun working for myself now than I ever would have staying with Uncle Sam. Still GOOD LUCK to your stepson, I hope he makes the most of his time in and comes out of it a better, stronger, more self sufficient man.
