A few possible causes of this: (1) Fluid (oil and possibly diesel fuel) in crankcase above the full mark on the dipstick. Remedy: If diesel is getting into crankcase, repair injector pump, drain and renew oil. If just overfilled, drain excess oil. (2) Tractor not in use for awhile-rings sticking in grooves. Remedy: work the tractor under load for a while and see if it clears up. (3) Damage to the rings and/or piston ring lands caused by something besides air (starting fluid, WD40, propane, gasoline liquid or vapors, etc.) getting in intake. (4) Use of motor oil designated 'for gasoline engines' and/or oil of a lower or higher viscosity than required for this engine; my manuals show 10W-30 for all temps with 10W being the lowest single-viscosity for cold weather and 30W being the highest for hot. (5) Damage caused by inadequate warmup and/or cooldown before/after heavy work. (6) Damage caused by engine overspeed (governor failure or adjusted too high).
