The deaker's probably right. I ran a boat and outboard motor repair business as a sideline back in the 1970's.
One thing that never ceased to amaze me was people who wouldn't dream of driving a five year old car would bring in a 30 year old outboard motor that come out of the back of someone's shed and then throw a fit when I told them we'd both be money ahead if I didn't touch it.
But--if you can find the parts and do the work yourself, it may work. Just remember two things. It's axiomatic in the business that outboard motor mechanics and auto mechanics are by necessity two entirely different breeds. And it's darned hard work rowing a boat back from the middle of the lake because your outboard motor wasn't reliable.
