I agree with all the above replies. I have corrected this shimmy or wobble which occurred on the road in 5th gear on many tractors. Any one or combination of the following can cause the problem. Check and correct the easy, no cost items first. 1) Inflate both front tires to equal pressure as specified in the Operator's Manual. 2)Raise the front end and check each wheel for bearing end play adjustment as specified in the Operator's Manual. 3) Spin each wheel and listen for any unusual bearing noise. 4)If you have tricycle front make sure tires are same size and same circumference around the center rib, if they are triple rib tread. 5)Spin the wheel to make sure runout is 1/16" or less. A tire going bad can have excess runout. Another cause is the tractor was run with the rim-to-wheel bolts loose and that wallowed out the holes. When the bolts are tightened, many times the rim is ecentric to axle. Runout can be radial or side-to-side. Either kind of runout will cause shimmy or wobble at road speeds. 6) Finally, check for free-play in the steering mechanism. Free play here allows more wobble, but it is not the root cause. Items 1) thru 5) are the root causes. It is nice to have minimum free-play at the steering wheel, but it can be expensive to minimise. By itself, Step 6) will not eliminate the problem. I hope this helps. Let us know what you did to fix the problem.

The advice is timeless... so although it isn't necessarily antique tractor related, it will be prominently displayed in our archives to honor those who have the courage to ask and those who have the courage to respond in an honest, positive manner.
