I have a neighbor that rented a large diesel Rayco stump grinder for the weekend. He ground up over 60 stumps of different sizes, the largest one was about 16". Most were 5-8" diameter.
What I did was cut off the stumps flush with the ground and then filled over with 3" of topsoil. How many stumps do you have? You could also go to a tree removal guy and say the magic word....Cash! and a case of beer for stump grinding.
