Although I'm far from a good Catholic, I do go with their view -- neither abortion nor capital punishment is morally right in modern society.
I don't believe it serves as a deterrent for murder or rape or other crimes against individuals, and as a society we have the resources to safely secure them from the public. Those acts of violence come from either passion, or complete sociopaths who simply do not care.
There may be crimes of deliberateness that it would be a deterrent, but I don't think embezzlement is worth capital punishment in any event; I'd listen to the argument if it is valuable to deter espionage.
If you get deep into the Catholic teachings on it, the objection to the death penalty is specifically in modern society -- self defense, or say the situation of some isolated island lacking the facilities and ability to guarantee the control of an individual it is a justifiable action. But modern states have other options and can exercise mercy, leaving the final judgement to God.
