Got that lesson myself. Moved to Phoenix and visited an old co-worker. He wanted to show me his new aquisition, a Ruger P-something. I said it wasn't a good time with his wife and kids/neighbors kids in the room, but he insisted. He said it wasn't loaded. He handed the thing to me and I pointed it at the floor and checked it clear. It was not. The shell jumped into the air and when I closed the slide, it chambered the next. Heck, had I thought it was loaded I would have dropped the clip first, but what kinda idiot carries a loaded weapon into a room full of kids and hands it to someone? I dropped the clip, cleared the loaded round and handed it back to him with the slide locked open, clip out and two rounds laying on the carpet. Scared the shot out of me...
Kid I grew up with sent a VCR to Glory with a 410 that his dad cleared for him.
