I'm the exception not the norm, but I lost 50+ acres of bottom land pasture hay in the flood. Baled 3 acres of it where I had planted some trefoil just so the trefoil could compete, but I think it was more dirt than hay.
You're right though, $1.00 - $1.10 calves sure don't pay. I'll probably just sell down my herd instead of trying to buy crap hay at $90/ton.
Check out this comparison of 2007 vs 2008 food prices. Beef and Pork remain steady while everything else skyrockets. I was expecting $1.25 - $1.50 calves by now just to cover the fuel cost. I'm really not sure what's keeping the price down. Still better off than the poor hog farmers though.
