I don't know about Chevy engines, but the Ford 6.9 was designed and built by International Harvester as a diesel engine. It is quite simply not a modified gas engine. It and it's successor, the 7.3, are very reliable engines. People commonly work them hard yet get 250,000 out of them without ever having the head off. Although the 6.9 was initially opposed by IH management, sales of these engines to Ford helped keep I.H. afloat during its last few years. For a good book read, "A Corporate Tragedy: the Agony of International Harvester Company," by Barbara Marsh. It provides information on the 6.9, but above all is a good lesson in corporate arrogance and incompetence.
