Dumb Question

Now that I am getting some age on me(30), I have learned that the only dumb question is the one that you don't ask. With this in mind, I must ask.....What are shutters? Is that a dumb question or what? Maybe these are something that I have been calling something else for a long time. I've been on the farm all my life and don't know what people are refering to when talking about shutters. I'm sure someone will tell me, and you can go into detail if you have the time, but just don't make fun of me. Thank You.
