I had the same issue with my 96 Explorer. That particular computer module controls the speedometer, 4WD, dome lights, windshield wipers, and a few other things. If you pull the fuse to shut off the dinger you lose these functions.
You can cut various wires to get rid of the "key in ignition" and "door open" reminder dings, but I wasn't satisfied with this for my application (deer hunting). I still had "ding-ding-ding" on occasion as the door opened.
The only way I could find to do what you are looking to do was to remove the computer module, un-solder the dinger from the circuit board, solder wires in place, run the wires outside the module case to an SPDT switch behind the dash, then solder the dinger on one side of the switch and a 100 ohm resistor on the other. Now I can switch the dinger on and off, and get complete silence when I want it, as well as retain an optional operating mode with the original functionality. It works pretty slick.
The 100 ohm resistor is to convince the computer that the dinger is still there even when the switch is in the "off" mode, in case the computer has a self-check function for the circuit. It may not be necessary.
This mod is not for the faint of heart, as that module is "personalized" for your truck, including such variables as tire size, number of doors, 2WD, 4WD, etc. So even though the electronics are quite cheap (maybe $5 worth of parts in volume), the only viable source for a replacement for a damaged module is the dealer, and I'll bet the selling price is $200 or more. So hack into it with care!

Today's Featured Article - Earthmaster Project Progress Just a little update on my Earthmaster......it's back from the dead! I pulled the head, and soaked the stuck valves with mystery oil overnight, re-installed the head, and bingo, the compression returned. But alas, my carb foiled me again, it would fire a second then flood out. After numerous dead ends for a replacement carb, I went to work fixing mine.I soldered new floats on the float arm, they came from an old motorcycle carb, replaced the packing on the throttle shaft with o-rings, cut new ga
