Google for "Larsen trap" which is a simple cage type trap that lots of us use in UK. Easy to make, hard to catch the first bird! Use eggs & some hay made into a nest & leave it by a tree but in full view. Once you have the first bird caught, keep him as a decoy & others will be easy. You'll need a little shelter for him plus a drinker & some food daily.
Knocking back the magpies makes a big difference to the numbers of small song birds around the place.
in UK magpies are smart: once you've shot 5 or 6 even with a silenced .22, the others treat the place like Israeli air space & you'll be lucky to get another until next year's young dumb ones come along.
