If you checked the oil immediately after shutting it off, there was probably still a lot of oil in the upper part of the engine. Need to wait a while for it all to drain down.
Diesel in the oil and the oil level rising are good indications of a leaky injection pump. The pump on my WD-6 (same engine as an MD) has its own oil sump. Apparently these pumps are known for leaking between the primary pump and the injection pump sections, resulting in diesel in the injection pump sump. I suppose if the sump in the injection pump got full enough it could leak into the crankcase??? Something to check.
