The "New Model" Blackhawks have a transfer bar and are as safe as any handgun made. The concerns about safety with single actions comes from MUCH older technology when you had to carry an SA with the hammer down on an empty chamber as a sharp blow to the hammer could cause a discharge. No longer possible.
The only advantage to DAs is faster loading and the marginally simpler action: Just point it and pull the trigger.
A Blackhawk is the best bang for the buck (you should pardon the pun) out there. You cannot buy a stronger or more inherently accurate gun for the same money.
The .38/.357 is a very versatile caliber. Light .38SPL is very comfortable and relatively inexpensive to shoot which encourages practice which is critical to competence; upper-limit .357 is good for a lot of game. I personally think it's not a good idea for deer unless you're an experienced shooter and can be very sure of shot placement, but a lot of people have taken deer with that round.
I have a couple of S&W DA Revolvers and I love them too, but I paid significantly more money for them as well. Nearly double in some cases.
