Tom, I have owned a UD 1800 (18,000 GVW, 28,000 comb)for about two years. I call it my one ton on steroids. I think that it is a fantastic truck. It now has 314,000 on it and still goes through 5000 mile oil changes without adding oil. The oil doesn't even get dirty for 3000 miles. No leaks or drips anywhere on the drive train. It has a 6 cylinder 423 cubic inch turbo diesel that is rated at 210 hp and 454 ft lb of torque at 1600. I believe these figures are accurate as it has a lot of power. It has a 6 speed tranny and I seldom run into a hill that I have to shift down on. I recently crossed Snoqualmie pass here in Washington state, with a gvw of over 16,000, without shifting down once. It has an air over hydraulic braking system that is really powerful. It has large drum brakes all around. Disk brakes would probably be better, but this thing really stops great. I pull a light (10,000 # cap) 20' trailer with it. You don't even know it's behind you. Trailer backing is extremely easy as the truck steers tighter than anything I've ever seen. I have a 14' flatbed on mine and it will turn inside a 3/4 ton pickup easily. The cab is nicely laid out and the truck is easy to drive. It is like a scaled down semi. They come with air assist on the clutch, power steering, exhaust brake, air dryer, water filter, just about everything you find on the big rigs. The tilt cab is easy to work and you can service it easily. The only knock I have on the truck, right now, is that being a cab over, you sit over the front wheels and the ride is not as good as a conventional cab. It's not real bad, but if a guy had a bad back or something, it would be something to think about. With air on board, you could put in an air seat I guess. I'm not bothered enough to do that. Over all, I think it's a great truck. I hope this is helpful to you,if you have an any more questions that I might help you with, either post or e-mail me. I forgot to mention that I've gotten over 18 mpg traveling empty on the freeway with it.

Show Coverage: Journey to Ankeny - by Cindy Ladage. We left Illinois on the first day of July and headed north and west for Ankeny, Iowa. Minus two kids, we traveled light with only the youngest in tow. As long as a pool was at the end of our destination she was easy to please unlike the other two who have a multitude of requirements to travel with mom and dad. Amana Colonies served as a respite where we ate a family style lunch that sustained us with more food than could reasonably fit into our ample physiques. The show at Ankeny
