You must have an "open station" tractor with the relatively rare 33 Amp alternator.
It is a Bosch alternator, and it would certainly HELP if you had posted the numbers off of the tag!
The regulator for the 33 Amp unit IS shown as NLA, subbing to a new 55 Amp alternator, part # AL81436, @ about $325.00. NOT SEEING where they are coming up with the $500.00.
MOST LIKELY, the brushes, hanging from the back of the regulator are stuck and/or worn out. A local automotive electrical shop should be able to replace just the brushes, or get you a regulator, as needed. (The brushes are soldered in place.)
Or contact these folks, with the alternator numbers in hand. Almost certainly they can help you with parts, and are good to deal with and will quickly send out any ordered parts.

After some research of convert or not, I decided to go ahead, the main reason being that this tractor was a working tractor, not a show tractor (yet). I did keep everything I replaced for the day I do want to restore her to showroom condition.
