I have a service manual...don"t think it is a Honda publication..but I followed the steps they outlined. There are 2 sensors...a shifter motor sensor and another whose name escapes me without referring tothe book. Both were replaced. The battery too, was replaced, although the original tested fine.
HOWEVER, you may have hit on something concerning the speedometer. Mine is broken....or rather it doesn"t give a display any longer due to a broken bezel/lense. Hmmm. I honestly couldn"t care less about a speedometer, but I doubt it can be bypassed. This machine has never been mudded or used to fjord streams. It has always been garaged and basically well cared for. I doubt there is 2,000 miles on it. It runs the very best in all respects....except the damned shifter refuses to work.
