Tractor Maintenance

I was just wondering for you guys out there that have tractors that did not have large production #'s, are not popular, and rather unique - what do you do for parts? Where do you get maintenance items for your tractors? Has anyone swapped out an engine so that maintaining it wouldn't be such a hassle?

I'm new to the tractor world and just purchased an older tractor (although not an antique). The tractor has a gas powered engine (around 30 hp). I am told that the engine is actually a Mazda engine (72 CID) - and I am trying to figure out if this will make it any easier to get parts for it (auto parts store?). How could I find out if the engine was used in any other applications (snow mobiles, outboard motors, etc.)?

Being new to the tractor world, and having bought a tractor that is not very popular (IH 284) I am just wondering what kind of tricks I will need to learn in order to maintain it. It seems for older cars it is easier to find parts for than older tractors (but then again I am talking about Camaro's and Mustangs which were a little more popular than an IH 284!).

Thanks for any ideas,
Mike

Today's Featured Article - Listening to Your Tractor - by Curtis Von Fange. Years ago there was a TV show about a talking car. Unless you are from another planet, physically or otherwise, I don’t think our internal combustion buddies will talk and tell us their problems. But, on the other hand, there is a secret language that our mechanical companions readily do speak. It is an interesting form of communication that involves all the senses of the listener. In this series we are going to investigate and learn the basic rudimentary skills of understanding this lingo. ... [Read Article]
