Deane, I run into your problem once and it's hard to get the brushes loose from the thick flat copper bar that the brushes are folded over and soldered to without burning the field windings. I got them out as best I could and packed the end with asbestoes and when hot enough I took a pair of side cutters and opened the fold over. Put a little flux on it and clamped in the new one and run a little solder on it. That worked for me. I would recommend that you use an old soldering copper (kinda big) so you won't get as much heat into the windings. I think I used little wedges of wood to hold out the brushes while putting the commutator back in place. Put a drop of oil on the bushings and assemble and test it w/ jumper cables and battery before you install it. Bout a two beer job...
