If he is 18 years old and only beginning his senior year, it appears that somewhere there was a "do over". Unless there was some medical consideration preventing him from attending school, he was given the taxpayer provided obligatory chance to finish his education (12 grades in 12 years). Consequently I would consider this opportunity to attend another year as a "gift". If he wants "freedom" then quit school and go for a GED. This would allow him considerably more freedom, and not be a distraction to the "silent" majority whom are attending high school for educational reasons rather than to experience a last "fling". Perhaps after the Navy stint, he will more appreciate possible educational opportunities and be able to fully utilize any forthcoming GI benefits.
